Cipro Tendon Damage & Tenden Rupture

Cipro (Generic: Ciprofloxacin) is in a class of antibiotics called fluroquinolone, which have come under attack in recent months as being linked to serious adverse side effects. Cipro side effects include serious tendonitis, tendon damage and ruptures in the Achilles tendon, rotator cuff (shoulder), the biceps, the hand, and the thumb.

FDA Cipro Warnings of Tendon Ruptures

On July 8, 2008, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) imposed Black Box Warnings (the government's most urgent safety warning) on Cipro and similar antibiotics, citing evidence that Cipro and other listed antibotics might lead to serious tendon ruptures that could leave patients incapacitated and needing extensive surgery. Most tendon ruptures, tendonitis, tendon damage and ruptures occur as a result of sports injuries, but the new link of tendonitis, tendon damage and ruptures to antibotic treatment is highly suspect and has the medical community questioning the serious link  and side effect. FDA officials stressed that if a Cipro patients stop taking the drug at the first sign of pain or swelling in a tendon, call their doctor, and switch to another antibiotic then the tendonitis, tendon damage and ruptures in the Achilles tendon, rotator cuff (shoulder), the biceps, the hand, and the thumb may be lessened or even prevented.

No Cipro Recall Announced

The two leading drugs covered by the warning are Cipro, made by Bayer, and Levaquin, which is made by Ortho-McNeil. Cipro became a household name during the anthrax attacks of 2001. It is effective against that deadly bacteria, and is among the medications stockpiled by the government in case of a bio-terror attack. In everyday medicine, Cipro is often used to treat urinary tract infections. Levaquin is generally used to treat respiratory infections. NOTE: No FDA Cipro recall has been issued nor has any news of a future Cipro recall been announced.
