Reglan / Metoclopramide can cause Tardive Dyskinesia TD

Reglan, also known as metoclopramide, is indicated for the treatment of a number of gastrointestinal disorders, heartburn, acid reflux and diabetic gastroparesis. When injected, Reglan helps prevent chemotherapy-related and postoperative-related nausea and vomiting. The drug may also facilitate small bowel intubation. Long term use of Reglan has been linked to tardive dyskinesia, which may include involuntary and repetitive movements of the body, even after the drugs are no longer taken. The development of this condition is directly related to the length of time a patient is taking Reglan and the number of doses taken. Those at greatest risk include the elderly, especially older women, children and people who have been on the drug for more than 12 weeks or 3 months. Recently the FDA issued a warning concerning Reglan (metoclopramide) risks of tardive dyskinesia (See:FDA Reglan Warning)

When taken by mouth in tablet or syrup form, Reglan treats a stomach problem known as diabetic gastroparesis. Symptoms of the disorder include heartburn, nausea, a feeling of fullness after meals, vomiting and anorexia. Reglan is also prescribed to patients suffering from gastroesophageal reflux (the backward flow of gastric acid into the esophagus).

Reglan Side Effects

Potential side effects of Reglan include, but may not be limited to, diarrhea, drowsiness, restlessness, constipation, nausea, rash, depression and irritability. Reglan usage has been linked to Tardive Dyskinesia !!  Tardive Dyskinesia is a central nervous system disorder. Tardive dyskinesia is characterized by involuntary, repetitive movements of the extremities, or lip smacking, grimacing, tongue protrusion, rapid eye movements or blinking, puckering and pursing of the lips, or impaired movement of the fingers. These symptoms are rarely reversible and there is no known treatment. See your doctor if you have experienced serious health problems after taking Reglan.
